Vocational Rehabilitation
Student Internship Program
The Student Internship Program was started in 1999 for students who are classified by the school district's CSE as having a disability. It is designed for students who are looking for an alternative to a BOCES classroom.
The Arc sets up an internship for the student at a business in the community and provides a Job Coach for a portion of the school day. Internship specifics depend on what the student/school is looking for as to how the program is designed and how many hours the Arc provides services.
Internships provide the student with stimulating and challenging professional projects, assignments, and activities that enhance the student's educational experience and skills. In return, the Arc receives the benefit of a dedicated, enthusiastic addition to their staff.
Summer Youth Employment
The Summer Youth Employment Program was started in 2000 due to parents requesting the support of a Job Coach for their son or daughter to be successful in summer employment. The program assists students who qualify for Pre-Vocational Services with locating paid summer employment and provides job coaching support by assisting the student with learning job duties and adjusting to the workforce such as:
- Emphasize real-world labor expectations
- Increase awareness of services offered by local community-based organizations
- Provide opportunities for career instruction, financial literacy training, academic improvement and social growth
Transition Mentoring
The Transition Mentoring Program was started in 2005 and provides guidance to schools and families for their students/children who are planning for the future beyond school; whether it is for work or higher education. This includes information on navigating the adult service system and providing assistance where needed.
