March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

Allegany Arc joins people across the country to celebrate March as National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.  In 2010, there remains a lack of understanding of all the things people with developmental disabilities are capable of.  While progress has been made in the treatment of people with developmental disabilities – this group still faces many challenges.

People with developmental disabilities have proven themselves to be reliable, hard workers and yet 60 percent (21 million nationwide) remain unemployed.  Along with that, they are more likely to become victims of a crime than those without a disability.

Allegany Arc continues to strive in providing the highest quality opportunities for people with special needs and their families.  Now more than ever – we need your help.  Don't just acknowledge March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, embrace it!

Your business can hire a person with a disability, invite individuals to participate in your civic organization, ask our local and state politicians to support people with disabilities in our community, and/or utilize Allegany Arc's vast training and resource library to teach children to recognize that all people can contribute.

Allegany Arc is proud to work with people with developmental disabilities of all ages.  Great strides are being made every day to teach independence, achieve individual goals, and find job opportunities for people served by our agency.  Michele Nye, Director of Vocational Educational Services noted, "Allegany Arc's goal during Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is to help the community understand more about abilities and what people with developmental disabilities are capable of.  What's that, you ask?  The sky's the limit."
